What fuels your drive? I asked my grandson three years ago when he was seven, what he wanted to be when he grows up and I was shocked by his answer. I thought he would give me the typical policeman, fireman, astronaut or doctor response. Perhaps, I thought he would respond to the question the way my granddaughter did when she was four stating that she wanted to be a, “SpongeBob Ballerina Karate Expert,” which in my estimation was a more reasonable and expected response for a seven-year-old. However, what he said was, “I want to run your company.” I was astounded by his response. In fact, I have spent parts of the past three years attempting to find ways to restate the question thinking he would submit a different response. However, no matter how many ways I have attempted the cleverly disguise question, his response each time has been the same. Thus, I am driven by the need to have a company available for him to run in the future, which is what fuels me every day.

Books you've enjoyed and what's the takeaway from that book? Two of my most favorite books have been Think and Grow Rich and The Alchemist. My biggest takeaways relate the law of reciprocity and how what you put out impacts what you get back in return. At the end of the day, it often boils down to how you think and how thought can be transformed into its mutual counterpart; the mastermind principle. Persistence does not recognize failure, but it understands the necessity of failure to succeed, and thus searches for the lessons within every failure that brings an equal seed of success. Your greatest achievement to date was at first, and for a time, but a dream. In fact, no one is ever defeated until defeat is accepted as reality. If you think you are beaten, you are. If you think you dare not, you don’t. If you think you’ll lose, you’ve lost. Success begins with your will and ability to attract the forces you need in order to succeed.

What are the lessons you've gained that have profoundly shifted your direction in business? The biggest lessons I have learned with regards to shifting the way I approach and do business have been those connected to understanding the order of God first, then family and lastly work. For me, the most important lesson I have learned is the necessity for balance and properly prioritizing your desired outcome. Unfortunately, most people are heavily focused on reaching their goals without placing much emphases on what is needed to maintain their goals once they have been achieved. In fact, getting it is not the problem, the problem will always be maintaining it. For example, get a wife, a mansion and a Bentley; don’t maintain it, get divorced, foreclosed and repossessed.
Your mantra? Your floor is someone else's ceiling. Always be appreciative for where you are, but never stop attempting to reach the next floor. I adopted this mantra sometime around the late 90's after realizing I wasn't where I wanted to be as it related to success, but I was in a better place than I realized. In retrospect, success is relative and determined by the individual. In fact, you will find that to some, metaphorically you are actually standing on their ceiling as it relates to your accomplishments. While to others, they are metaphorically standing on your ceiling. At the end of the day, it's not about comparing yourself to others, it's about living out your calling to the best of your abilities.
What type of digital magazine or periodicals do you enjoy? I enjoy reading Billboard Magazine, which helps me to stay abreast regarding all matters related to the music industry. I also like reading HITS Daily Double, Radio Facts and Above the Law.
Favorite spots to frequent for business connections in Atlanta/National/International and why? I don’t frequent the Commerce Club in Atlanta as often as I would like, but I love the atmosphere as it relates to networking with key people in Atlanta. In addition, Los Angeles is definitely on my list of trips at least 4 times a year. Overall, it’s a great town for networking and getting things done with respect to the entertainment community. I love how I can bump into people that I need to do business with without too much hassle. Seemingly, the movers and shakers are always out and about and available to create opportunities and form synergies. On the intentional side, I have been spending more time in Vienna as it relates to the work I am doing with the United Nations. I have immensely enjoyed my trips to Vienna and working with people from all over the world at the UN.
What do you do for fun? I am asked this question often and I am always slightly at a loss for words. I spend a great deal of time working, but one of my favorite things to do when I am not working is thrift shop. I also enjoy spending time with my grandkids. For the most part, that keeps me fairly busy outside of work.
What legacy do you want to leave behind? I used to say that I wanted the words, “I tried” written on my tombstone when I die. However, I realized that the words I tried might give an indication that I didn’t succeed. Therefore, I have recanted that statement. Specifically, the legacy I would like to leave behind is that of someone who approached life by attempting to accomplish things that were greater than himself. I would like to be known as someone who put God first in his life while focusing on the importance of family and the success thereof. The first time I ever saw my future in someone else’s eyes was when I looked at my grandson for the first time. That moment was the spark that further ignited my desire to build a legacy and positively impact future generations. Above all, I hope to make a difference in the lives of others by making the world a better place overall.
