What was your first job ever and what was the takeaway from that experience? My first job was working in a manufacturing plant in my hometown of Stevenson, Alabama the summer of my Junior year.  The company was the Lee Jean Company and my role was to place the button and buttonhole on the jeans. I had a daily quota to place a certain number of buttons and buttonholes by the end of the day.  The role taught me planning and organizing skills, time management, execution skills and relationship management.  I made several friends that summer from women that worked at the plant for 30+ years to younger people who were just like me, making and saving money for the upcoming school year.  I’ll never forget the Lee Jean Company as it gave me my first experience in strategic planning and how to leverage relationships to get things done!

What’s your most memorable milestone and why? My most memorable milestone that taught me a life lesson at (17) was when I decided to apply and was accepted to The University of Alabama.  I came from a small rural high school (population about 800 total school), which I loved, some of the best times of my life.  For some reason unknown to me some of our school career counselors wanted students to start small via their college aspirations (community colleges, smaller institutions, etc.) and move to larger universities.  I was no different and was given the same counsel.  Because I’ve always had strong faith in God and a belief that a positive attitude and words of affirmation leads to your destiny, I decided to take a different approach.  I applied to a school that I always wanted to attend and knew I could be successful if I worked hard. I applied to UA, was accepted and graduated with a BA in Communications.  The reason it was a memorable milestone was because it showed me, I had inner strength to succeed, a strong work ethic to ensure my grades were on point and a belief that amazing things happen when you focus on your goals.

What’s been the most significant contribution you’ve had for your company to get to the success you have today? My most significant contribution from a business perspective was when I took the risk of moving from one business discipline (HR) where I was on an upward trajectory to a discipline that was a developmental opportunity (Marketing).  It was my proudest moment because it took me out of my comfort zone and allowed me to validate (to myself and others) that transferrable skills are key. I had no traditional experience in Marketing, but knew I had the business skills necessary to add value and make a difference. Companies want associates that stay curious, take risks and lead with relentless confidence.  It’s been more than a decade since I took that leap and it was worth it, professionally and personally.  Vision enabled me to dream about a career change, boldness enabled me to jump.  Don’t allow fear to keep you on the launch pad.  Just jump!

Gypsy Kitchen draws inspiration from the culinary riches of Spain - infused with Moroccan traditions from across the Gibraltar and Indian influences that travelled west along the same seas. Centuries of interplay between these food traditions and lands inspires our Iberian fusion plates.

What process have you taken that has been the vehicle to the success of your professional journey? The processes I’ve taken (and still take) on my professional journey is a combination of things. When I started my career, I would always look for business professionals that were in roles that I aspired to be in, connected with those people for inspiration, coaching and counseling.  I’ve always stayed abreast of current business trends by conducting research on my own as well as attending conferences, seminars and summits.  It’s important that we invest in ourselves personally and professionally as we grow into the best overarching person we can be!

Looking back, you’ve had mentors that have shifted the direction of your professional career, who have been the most memorable mentors that consistently pushed you and why? When I started with The Coca-Cola Company I was introduced to Charlene Crusco-Ingram, SVP of HR, now CEO of Meals on Wheels. She became a mentor and inspiration as I progressed with the company. Her quiet, yet powerful leadership style taught me to stay calm during conflict, think strategically to resolve challenges, seek to understand and respect other opinions.  Her elegance and grace in all that she accomplished gave me a true sense of what leadership should look and feel like.

With your current role, what was it that inspired you to push harder & what are your strategies to achieve them? With any role I’ve had what inspires me to push harder is my goal to ensure that I always add value and contribute to the success of whatever objective the team is trying to reach. In my opinion, strategies to accomplish goals is to ensure you understand the outcome/objectives (the what), determine strategies to meet the objective (the how), manage budget and develop the execution plan to launch.

How do you face challenges and how do you overcome them?  I face challenges head on, first understanding why there are challenges and barriers (what’s the cause), determine the approach to address the challenges, determine who should be on the team to help alleviate the challenge, then execute the strategy to breakdown the challenge.  The better you seek to understand upfront the better you can develop an action plan.

What has been your rule of thumb in terms of arriving at resolutions that will work for the team? To have the team involved in helping to come up with resolutions.  The more team members feel they have a voice, the more they’re going to be engaged and involved.

If you were to mentor your younger self, what advice would you give? I would tell my younger self to never conform or change who you are to emulate someone else. I’ve learned the importance of embracing who I am and it’s a valuable piece of advice. It’s fine to have others inspire you, but we all have a unique thumb print that makes us special.  When we see successful people, we only see the “success”, we don’t know the back story of challenges and obstacles they encountered.   I would encourage the younger Stella to tell her own story and be authentic, your never know how your story will encourage and uplift others

In your personal experience, what is the fundamental key to success? Everyone defines success differently and how people get there is different as well.  In my opinion, the key to success is whatever makes you happy and delivers on the definition that you’ve given success.  For me personally, success manifests itself in several aspects, my family, friends, career and community.  There may not be fulfillment in every aspect at the same time, but they balance and support each other.  If my career journey hits a snag, my time with my family gives me hope and encouragement that my career journey will get back on track.  Again, it’s whatever you define as success.  No one can live your life but you!

What do you know now that you wish you knew then? The effectiveness of collaboration. I’ve found it’s important to create an environment of inclusiveness, understanding and that everyone brings something different and ownable to the table.  I leverage team similarities and differences, which always results in bigger, stronger outcomes.  This approach has served me well professionally, personally and via the community work I lead.

What sets you on fire and keeps you motivated? What keeps me motivated is working hard to leave a character legacy for my son. When you think of legacy, sometimes people think of leaving their children with a financial legacy; which is important, and I aspire to do as well. My broader hope is that Peyton sees and knows his mom did her “darnest” to make a difference in the world by giving back.  Success brings an obligation to joyously help others!  I pray that he sees that in me and will follow my lead!

What’s your hell yes moment? I’ll go back to when I made the bold move from HR to Marketing at Coca-Cola.  Something that hadn’t been done often and inspired others to do the same. It’s great when you do something game changing that helps you, but when that change allows people to think differently and gives them confidence to do it too is groundbreaking!

What’s one word that sums you up? Compassionate

What’s your next exciting project that you’re really looking forward to doing & why? I’ve been on the Fundraising committee for the Goode Foundation for the last few years.  In December (2019) we’ll have our 2nd Gala to raise funds for the organization.  The goal of the Goode Foundation is to beat ALS!  The organization is personal as I have a dear college friend (Kerry Goode) who was diagnosed with the disease in 2015. His strong faith and awesome attitude inspired many of my University of Alabama friends and I to plan and execute the gala to raise funds to help fight the disease.  We can’t wait for December to get here.  Please visit goodefoundation.org for more information! http://goodefoundation.org/
