Define Beyond Beauty- To me, “Beyond Beauty” means that the world sees your inner beauty shining bright. It’s how you treat others, the compassion you have for strangers, expecting nothing in return, and the positive energy you bring to each encounter. I have a friend that I just met a couple of months ago, I have never once heard them say anything negative about anyone. I told another friend that being around this person, makes me a better person. My hope is that I can bring this feeling to those I encounter each day.
What type of company do you run? I am the CEO of Sheltering Books, Inc. a non-profit that my children started. Over the past 12 years, we have collected and donated close to 500,000 children’s books to homeless children living in shelters, across the USA, as well as, in 6 other countries. It all started when my daughter developed serious health problems at the age of 10. She spent many months in bed in great pain. The only way she could get her mind off her pain, was to escape in reading books. Her pediatrician, Dr. Nancy Gallups, asked her what she did with her books once she had finished reading them. Dr. Gallups to Mackenzie about a residential treatment center for severely abused children, in Cedertown, Georgia called Murphy Harpst. They were needing age appropriate books for the children and teens who reside there. Mackenzie gathered up her books and asked friends and neighbors for their books, soon her brothers joined in going to garage sales around Alpharetta, asking for children’s books that didn’t sell. Soon they donated 11,000 books to Murphy Harpst. The staff had to tell them to stop donating books, they had plenty to stock their new librarian. We knew if this home needed books, homeless shelters probably did as well. We contacted Children’s Restoration Network, based in Roswell to see if they knew of any shelters that would like books. They certainly did and over the next few years we would deliver thousands of books to shelters across the metro Atlanta area. Soon Sheltering Books, Inc. became a 501c3non-profit and we started shipping books around the world. My family finds great joy in the faces of the children we give books to, especially at the events where we give books directly to the children to have for their very own. The often ask us if we are sure they are free and that they can keep them for themselves.

What challenges did you face and what motivated you to solve them? In the 90’s I started helping take care of both my parents who were in wheelchairs. Then in 2003, my daughter got injured in a freak accident that caused severe nerve damage in her left leg. The condition is called Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, or Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy. It is known as the most painful chronic pain known and has no cure. It is compared to cutting off a limb without anesthesia. Despite my father losing both legs, due to Rheumatoid Arthritis, he never stopped doing what he and my mother wanted to do. I also never heard him complain. Dealing with my daughter’s pain condition has been life changing for our entire family, both positively and negatively. Had she not been injured, she would, most likely never have started Sheltering Books, Inc. Knowing that my father dealt with much more than I did and never complained, motivated me to be strong and find a way to help my daughter and the rest of the family make the best of a bad situation. Collecting and donating books to children who truly need them and appreciate our giving them something of their very own, has been a great positive distraction for her and has truly given all of us all a stronger sense of worth.

What fuels you and the wisdom that you’ve gained through the years? My children fuel me. I strive to be the best mother I can be. Although, I know I am certainly not perfect. My husband passed away this past spring and I had many of his friends, who I didn’t even know, tell me he always talked about what a great mother I was to our children. This is the best compliment I could get. I’m happy to be reassured he felt this way and knew they were in good hands without him.

Beauty regimen and practices? Thankfully, I have been blessed with the best genes in the world, lol. My mother was an amazingly beautiful woman. She didn’t have a single wrinkle on her face, even in her 70’s. Part of her secret was to always sleep on her back. I CAN NOT do that. I sleep with my face crammed into my pillow! That goodness for Botox! I’ve gotten Botox since my late 30’s. I feel it keeps you from ever being able to develop wrinkles. Luckily, I work of the best aesthetic dermatologist in the city and can just walk across the office to get it done!
