ON BUSINESS

Name a person who’s had a tremendous impact on you as an entrepreneur, business professional or business owner. How and why did this person impacted your life? Many women journalist my age would say Oprah or Barbra Walters, I say both. They truly have blazed a trail for women in all realms of media.  In addition to being top notch journalists, we’ve been able to watch their trials and triumphs over the years. They have graciously shared so many nuggets of wisdom. So, whether it’s not knowing if you should take a job, following your instinct or being comfortable in whatever size and age you happen to be at the time, we already know how they navigated through those situations.

3 things that we should know about you? I was on the weight loss reality show My Diet Is Better Than Yours. I really believe that I’m best friends with Beyoncé and Drake. When I was a little girl, I wanted to be a nun.

If I were to talk to one of your closest business colleagues what would they say about you? They would likely say I lead with my heart. I make professional and logical decisions everyday but I rarely do anything without my heart attached on some level.

One of the most exciting process of our existence is our evolution. As an entrepreneur, business professional, or business owner, what do you think your evolution has been in the last few years?  I’ve had my life planned out since I was ten years old. I spent years focused on the future and the end goal. In recent years I’ve learned to enjoy the present.

What one characteristic that you believe every leader should have? Every leader should have compassion. It’s easy to celebrate the success of your circle of influence. But I believe it’s equally as important to understand their sorrow as well. It’s hard to lead or manage what you don’t know.

Professional advice you received that tremendously shifted your career? Do everything in your power to master your craft. Work hard, continue to grow, but my mother always told me, “What God has for you, is for you and no one else.”

Ivy Lane is a gift and clothing boutique homegrown in Marietta, GA. We were founded by Julie Turner, a long-time Cobb county resident, Georgia Tech engineer, wife and mom of three, six years ago. We love being a shopping hub in Cobb county, and love giving back to this same community even more. Our East Cobb boutique is located in Marietta’s Highland Plaza Shopping Center at 3605 Sandy Plains Road near Publix and Bath & Body Works.

What is unique about your business? One of the things that makes news so interesting and adventures is that I have no idea where my story will take me for the day and whom I will meet. I could be assigned to cover a press conference with the governor, a panda being born at the zoo, severe weather or I could end up at a crime scene where an entire family has been murdered.

GETTING PERSONAL

What was your first job ever? I worked at a Chinese food restaurant at the mall when I was 13. I soon realized that I could make more money helping my friend’s parents clean out spaces they dreaded like basement closets and the garage. So, I started my own cleaning company and made my first $1,000 the next summer.

What do you do for fun? I love to entertain! When I’m not spending time with my husband (William) and our two boys (William-Charles, 4 and Winston-Xavier, 2), I love to go to the movies, a great restaurant and travel.

What legacy do you want to leave behind? I want to leave a pathway of success for my great grandchildren’s children. But I also want to leave a legacy that’s as significant as Oprah and Melinda and Bill Gates.

What advise will you give to the younger version of you? You are awesome and always will be, because you will always have whatever it is that you need at the time. You will have everything your heart desires, it may come in a different package or different time than you expected.
